Premiere: Introducing Blake Ambrose with “Last Bit of Flesh”

By Ryan G

In this day and age, poetry expression continues to evolve and genre lines continue to blur. I’ll take it a step further – art forms continue to blur. Blake Ambrose exists squarely in the hip hop world, but would fit right in alongside some spoken word artists, perhaps in a slam poetry event.

Blake Auler-Murphy is such an artist who bills himself as one who expressed “thought provoking musical poetry.” In a summer evening phone interview, the poet/rapper talked fast, having a lot to say yet remaining humble throughout the process. The artist formerly known as Hyphon has a lot he wants to say – a lot of it appearing contrary to his demeanor. The video for “Last Bit of Flesh” depicts him and friends in a laid back setting, yet with an aesthetic that abruptly shifts from color to black and white – as if to depict the tension in Blake’s mind. An inner battle between peace and tackling issues that matter – albeit in a very stream of consciousness manner. His new statement of purpose reflects this desire.

While talking with him, I noticed that he seemed to struggle to keep up with articulating everything on his mind. Though his cadence wavered between urgency and ease, I felt like I got to know the artist known as Blake Ambrose a lot more a few nights ago.

In a strange twist of irony, reality can unexpectedly mirror inner turmoil – inner conflict that is almost prophetic. This occurred with Blake. He is yet in the raw phase of leaving a long term relationship – one that was the focus of his forthcoming release Blurring the Moment’s Edge. The ironic part is he didn’t see the end of the relationship coming, but hindsight is 20/20 and the topic matter of the record, written over the past two years, often focuses on a reluctancy to move on.

Blake Ambrose hopes that this video will serve as a proper introduction to what he has coming down the pike. If you want some more clues, check out some tunes by Milo (a socially conscious artist I met at SXSW) and the project “Lucas Dix of Jellyfish Brigade presents Shut-ins and the Colony.”

The La Crosse, WI based artist welcomes your thoughts on this! Enjoy.
