Animal Collective – Painting With

Words: Bobby Brunner

Boy, does Animal Collective bring me back a little bit. Well in terms of how long I have liked Animal Collective, I would say I’m still pretty new.  Compared to a lot of people who have at least listened to Animal Collective, I would call myself a huge supporter of any of their music. That’s why when I heard they were dropping something new, I jumped on it!

Their sound evokes an entirely different emotion that can only be expressed by three words, the first being excitement. Animal Collective has a steady pulse and sometimes the pulse can be watered down, but nonetheless they always come back to it by adding even more instrumentation to the mix. I can’t even imagine what their music scores look like.

The second word I would use would be spacious. I mean this in almost a spiritual sense, almost as if every sound is so intricate and dependent on the other sounds taking place, yet each song can be broken down to each instrument, and it seems like every part tells a different story.

Finally, the third best word to describe the sound of Animal Collective would be voluminous. Much like spacious, Animal Collective can demonstrate an array of sound, each element acting independently yet coming together to form a final melody. It really is almost impossible to break it down to an essence, simply because as each song progresses, it’s hard to tell where exactly the song is headed. It’s quite the demanding challenge to try and find where each part began and left off.

Really the best way for me to listen to this album was to be filling my mind with something else while their music is playing in the background. This is actually why Animal Collective has always such an appeal to me. Their music does have an electric sort of stimulating pervasiveness, providing an ambience that only Animal Collective can accurately recreate. So as I began listening to “Painting With”, I went right down the track list for the first listen. As I expected, this album is in fact an album by Animal Collective. Sure you capture each song for how they coexist with the previous song and those that follow. Honestly, just hit shuffle. What makes Animal Collective so unique is their unpredictability, so if you want to experience nearly 45 minutes of sensory overload in the best way possible, as you surf through emotions you have never quite felt before, listen to Painting With. You will not be disappointed.
