Words: Bobby Brunner
There are truly not very many bands that can harness multiple sounds, creating a song that is so stylistically unique from the last one, and do it well as well as Dante Elephante has. With their completely unique lo-fi, psychedelic rock grooves, the band has been able to make each song define both qualities while remaining so distinct time and time again.
Each song comes with its own, up-beat, cheery vibe, that carries through the whole album. Even in the song “Never Trust a Junky”, which is a little bit more distorted and angsty, has a positive and thriving feel that doesn’t quite translate into “Kyoto ‘74”, which is a bit more psychedelic, and perhaps, more raw. One thing is for sure – the band has a passion for its music, heard with each intricate layer in each song. Each layer contributes to a driving pressure that keeps the listener engaged, unlike some lo-fi bands that tend to sound similar and lack variation. This becomes mundane and ultimately has the listener turning off their music.
In the song “Dreamliner” a subtle muffle of the instrumentation is accompanied by a humble voice from the singer, which is soft, and rich with its psychedelic tone. I find this track to be one of the more catchy songs on the album, or at least, I enjoy humming it as I walk aimlessly around my kitchen, cooking a meal, or perhaps taking a shower. It is one of those songs that will get the listener dancing softly, but also thinking simply, over matters to which you can slowly doze off to.
Anglo Saxon Summer will definitely be an album I will be listening until Dante Elephante’s next release. I highly recommend you head over to Soundcloud and give their new LP a listen, I’m sure you will not regret it.
