Looking to 2012: SBTRKT

By Ryan G

Dubstep has become a definite buzzword of 2011, with the popularity of Skrillex exploding (and his subsequent nomination for the Best New Artist Grammy).  The whimsical artist SBTRKT (of London) is poised to be the next big name in this scene.

SBTRKT (pronounced “subtract”) is the project of London producer Aaron Jerome.  He performs behind a weird, Rastafarian-esque mask with a fake “beard”.  He is often accompanied live by one of his main collaborators and featured vocalists, Sampha.  His debut LP record is diverse in whom it features, and also features a fair amount of instrumental pieces as well.

Usually, dubstep is a genre that I have to be in a very specific mood to listen to.  With my discovery of this artist, I could actually picture myself listening to him on regular basis.  I find each track worthy of zoning out, head bobbing (or a combination of the two!) and chock full of catchy melodies.  Look for ad placement, movie placement, and beyond when it comes to SBTRKT in 2012.  Since he is from the birthplace of dubstep, London, I have high expectations for this artist. He seems to be well on his way.

Love SBTRKT, his album defiantly one of my favourites of 2011. More post-dubstep than anything eles though, can hardly compare to Skrillex at all (also because Skrillex’smusic is aweful). If you like SBTRKT you might like Zomby, really chill.

True, SBTRKT isn’t really comparable to Skrillex – was just mentioning the latter in light of the general dubstep bandwagon that seems to be rolling. Thanks for the recommendations!
