Worst Kept Secret Fest VIII preview: The Magnumb Opus

By Ryan G

The first I heard of The Magnumb Opus, I think they were playing indie music haunt Brothers Drake Meadery. The perfect room to complement the sound of the band, I would realize later (in spite of me only seeing them perform once, in a different room).

The band takes alt rock inspired by The National and injects a small slab of dream pop and indie folk. Driving rhythm sections complement sections that are at times airy and at times foreboding. Live, they perform the music with poise and prefer to let the music speak for itself rather than inject unnecessary gimmicks. That was my impression, at least.

The Magnumb Opus are making their WKSF debut and it is the pleasure of Tuned Up to have them be first up in our WKSF VIII interview series.

Tuned Up: What’s the best live show you saw this past summer?

The Magnumb Opus: Cliffs at Comfest and Amos Lee

Various sites are proclaiming some conspiracy related to an event allegedly taking place in late September. What’s your favorite conspiracy theory?

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop?

October is Halloween month. Who or what did you dress up as that makes you cringe now?

We try not to have regrets though many were probably regretful.

In five words, where do you see your band in a few years?

The shortest answer is creating.

Full album tours are becoming a hip trend. What album do you need to hear front to back live?

Bon Iver’s For Emma Forever Ago. The show needs to be in the Black Box Theatre at the Wexner [Center] or in a snowy forest.

What is your worst kept secret?

We have sheet music for Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” and we are not afraid to use it. Go ahead and request it.

List three bands you wish more people knew, and why.

-Nils Frahm – Check out the album Screws – This album helps me make sense of the good and the bad.
-Johann Johannson – Check out the album ibm 1401 a user’s manual – a symphony about a dying computer with the coolest sounding organs / keys.
-Playing To Vapors – Check out A Glitch in a Void – I love their new album and I hope they find a national audience.

What lyric from a song just moves you like none other every time you hear it?

“You know you have a permanent piece of my medium sized American heart…You can break what you have but the rest of it’s mine.” From “Looking for Astronauts” off of Alligator by The National. Berninger often teeters between heartbreak and resilience, floors me almost every time.

You are booking a festival: where is it, and who headlines?

It’s at The Gorge Amphitheater, with The National, Radiohead, and Bon Iver headlining.

Your music is the soundtrack to a multimillion dollar movie. Who stars in it?

Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis.
