Worst Kept Secret Fest VI preview: The Runovers

By Ryan G

If you want a garage rock duo that gets straight to the point – look no further than The Runovers. Jack Doran, an accomplished singer songwriter takes on the drums in this project, while Sandeep, known for his rhythms as his alter-ego FreshFX takes the lead vocals and guitar playing. So somewhat of a role reversal for these guys. They will be going on a short live hiatus to record their debut, but in the meantime I’m looking forward to their set that kicks off Friday’s festivities. Q&A below:

What beverage goes best with a live performance from you guys?

JACK: Whiskey to get you moving, and water to keep you dancing.
SANDEEP: Whiskey and/or Water. You should either be wasted, or completely with it and ready to party / rage.

What’s the most interesting environment you’ve played in?

JACK: Pats in the Flats. It wasn’t actually in the flats, but the owner’s name was Pat, and she was very nice. It was an interesting night.
SANDEEP: Pats in the Flats is an awesome club in the Flats of Cleveland Ohio run by an awesome lady whose in her 70s. The club is surrounded by insanely huge relics of Cleveland’s industrial past.

What’s the most memorable show you’ve attended as a spectator?

JACK: Twenty One Pilots @ LC Pavilion, 2012
SANDEEP: The first Comrades/Endeavor show at The House with No Name was a revelation.

What song dominated your playlist last summer?

JACK: “Neptune Estate” King Krule
SANDEEP: ‘You’ by Gold Panda.

What are you looking forward to about this fall?

JACK: Having a band to play my solo material!
SANDEEP: We’re about to hit the studio. Can’t release many details as we’re still in negotiations, but we can say it will be a disc of most of our current live material. We’re also a few songs deep into the next album.

What musicians should we be paying the most attention to in Ohio (besides you, duh)?

JACK: Scott Baldwin and Joey Hebdo.
SANDEEP: It’s hard to pick just one, but I’m a huge fan of what Etana Caplin is doing right now.

Describe the experience of your music in five words.

JACK: Spirited, Loud, Heavy, Whatever, Dynamic
SANDEEP: Whiskey fueled basement rager soundtrack.

What currently active artist would you most like to play with (sky’s the limit)?

JACK: Ben Folds
SANDEEP: The Black Keys playing early 2000’s material. Would not turn down Sigur Ros / Radiohead.

What’s your favorite album of 2014? 8. What record are you most stoked about (unreleased)?

JACK: “Dark Arc” Saintseneca.
SANDEEP: Probably the new Thom Yorke album.

Where can we find you guys the most around Columbus (or your hometown)? Studio/home don’t count!

JACK: Bossy Girl’s, Spacebar, or Double Happiness!
SANDEEP: We don’t have anything booked after WKSF, focusing more on studio / writing for the rest of October going into November. I’m often found at Bossy Grrls Pin Up Joint, Donatos Basement, occasionally Bernies, Wild Goose Creative, The Garden Theater and The House with No Name with the booking company.
