You know this blog has made it. Why? We’re publishing this article in response to a request from Nickelback’s publicity. Really. We got a press release from their label to announce the release of “Edge of a Revolution.” To commemorate, we got some friends of Tuned Up to weigh in on these tunes from the rock giants… although this article is a little late now. Sorry! Read and enjoy:

Across the centuries social and political revolutions have been fueled by ideas, so it’s laughable to see revolution championed by a band that has never had any ideas at all. Here Nickelback lashes out at Wall Street with a verse of random, incomplete sentences, though they’re perfectly willing to play your private corparte party for half a million dollars. Nickelback has made a career of creating songs that connect emotionally with angry meatheads, now their trying to connect politically with angry meatheads. I hope I don’t live on the same block as the idiots that would be inspired by this song.
-Ron Freeman of Lost Orchards

as an independent musician, I feel a music revolution coming on, a new world where Nickelback doesn’t have 20M facebook followers. And where creative musicians can be in the spotlight a little more 🙂
-Wes Black of Fever Fever

It’s random. Avril’s invading his head, which is good since it’s harder and more biting. But (1) needs more Gaslight Anthem, (2) how many revolutions are there in Canada?

Nickelback is bringing back something that has been missing for a long time in mainstream rock & roll: good old protest lyrics. Now despite the verses sounding too much like Metallica (sad but true, I know…) and the lyrics themselves being rather predictable, the effort is very commendable given that their audience is not often exposed to this kind of content. I think is actually really cool.

I’ve never got into the “hate Nickelback” fad considering that from my perspective it’s not ok to trash somebody else’s art just because you don’t like it/agree with it (unless there’s something inherently wrong about it and a need to speak up against it is necessary). Don’t get me wrong, it is ok to voice your opinion anytime of the day -just don’t be a douche about it.

Now, did they do it because they want to cash in with some popular topic of the moment? Maybe. Or perhaps they are simply saying: how about you focus on matters that are actually important and relevant to you, and focus less on some arena rock band that you don’t care at all?

One of the biggest names in modern rock is back with an anthemic new single. “Edge of a Revolution” fits right in with many of the current radio hits dominating the airwaves, and while the message behind the music isn’t anything new, it’s still a step up from much of the band’s other content. That said, this song isn’t one I could see myself going back to very often, if at all. For all the hate that they get, the Canadian rockers sure know how to sell records.
