Our friends in BravoArtist are known for their sweet shows of the heavier variety in Columbus, and they have a pretty killer show set up with new Solid State signees The Ongoing Concept. At Heart, Carev Dvor, and Dream By Night have all signed on to open the Columbus stop of this tour. Since we think all openers bear at least checking out (every famous band was once a no name opening act), we caught up with the three Columbus based bands. If you read this on time, perhaps you’ll be so inclined to check out the show they’re playing at Kobo in Columbus on Sept. 29th!

Ryan Getz (IATU): If you guys were a 5 course dinner or a beverage, how would you sum it up?

Joshua Parker (At Heart): Honestly, I think they only way to describe us would be delicious 😉

Ilija Necovski (Carev Dvor): We’d probably be Pizza since that’s all we eat, maybe some sort of Asian dish or tea, Hayden is real big into healthy so maybe Tofu.

Seth Brown (Dream By Night): Before or after practice we always go to Raising Canes and all get sweet tea, which could arguably be the best meal the human race has forged.

RG: What are the best/worst parts of being a DIY band in today’s culture?

At Heart: The best part is definitely the feeling you get knowing you’ve succeeded without the help of some company that may or may not be trying to suck the life out of you. It’s really rewarding emotionally. The worst part, though, is all the work that goes into promotion and booking. It’s tough, especially when you come from a scene like ours. At Heart is the lightest “alternative” band within about a 45 minute radius of where we live.

Carev Dvor: Honestly, I really don’t have an opinion, If we ever tour then I could come back with an answer.

Dream By Night: I think the best part would be that you’re not having to be forced into doing something you and your band don’t want to do. We’ve never been a managed band, but we have friends who are, and they’re constantly frustrated about how their label/management is pushing them to do things that they would rather take at their own pace, or just not do. In my opinion, that takes all the fun out of being a band. The worst part would be the stress of keeping up. Our band has definitely grown some grey hairs from figuring it out all on our own, but we enjoy ever minute.

RG: Where can we find you guys most often in Columbus/Ohio?

At Heart:Since we’re not from Columbus, you won’t find us there often (but when we’re up there, we love Late Night Slice pizza haha) and honestly, you’re going to most likely find us at work or school. We don’t get out much.

Carev Dvor: Most often is probably anywhere, Columbus til I die.

Dream By Night: We hang out a lot in Columbus, I don’t think we could pin it down to any certain locations. However, our drummer Nathan lives on campus and has season tickets to the Buckeye games so you can find him around there.

RG: Who would play in your dream show? You can be playing in the show or watching.

At Heart: Oh, wow…hmm… Fall Out Boy Hawthorne Heights Asking Alexandria Sum 41 We Came As Romans SECRETS and Avion Roe That’s a hard question, but we draw a lot of influence individually from those bands.

Carev Dvor: Dream show for me personally would consist of Enter Shikari, Counterparts, Defeater, Touche Amore, and Worthwhile, If I could maybe have Make Do and Mend, La Dispute, Taking Back Sunday, or Hostage Calm on there too and make it a festival.

Dream By Night: Personally, if I could open for Anberlin, The Wedding, Wolves at the Gate, and The Devil Wears Prada, my life would be made. Our drummer would probably kill to play with Avenged Sevenfold though (#failtotheking).

RG: What can we expect at your live show?

At Heart: Expect mosh pits…Just not during our set. We’re there to make you get all emotional until you call your ex and beg them to take you back. We’re the soundtrack to someone’s dateless prom night.

Carev Dvor: Expect at our show or a hardcore show in general? Honestly, we just play to play, it sound super cliche and stereotypical but we go up there to express ourselves, our faith, and to play with and meet the people who have helped motivate us. All I can say is just come to have fun.

Dream By Night: The first thing you would notice is the most active bass player you’ve seen, and we has a whole like to pump up our live show (We’re hoping to get to The Chariot level). Overall we strive to be a band that’s different in our music and performance. But we like to keep it honest because we just want to have fun, praise Jesus, and make friends.

RG: What’s dominating your playlist(s) right now?

At Heart: Fragile Figures by SECRETS Take This to Your Grave by Fall Out Boy (it always dominates) The new Mayday Parade singles And The Bitter Hello EP by our friends in Ohio on Hi!

Carev Dvor: New music has been on my mind; Counterparts – The Difference Between Hell & Home Defeater – Letters Home Touche Amore – Is Survived By Worthwhile – Carry On, Kid (Re-release) Also some Polar Bear Club, The Oh Hello’s, Make Do And Mend, Citizen, Turnover, Kye Kye, Gideon, Charlie & The Foxtrots, Pity Sex, a variety.

Dream By Night: The new The Devil Wears Prada album, 8:18, is our current emotional affair. We’ve also been really digging the new Dangerkids album, Collapse.

RG: What’s a trend we should be paying attention to in music?

At Heart: We should probably be paying attention to screamless hardcore music making a surge. That sound weird, but I’m talking Nativ and I Am Abomination-that stuff is killer. There’s also always that hope for a resurgence in Mayday Parade style pop punk. Because, let’s face it, everybody likes to have their day absolutely ruined by listening to an emotional song.

Carev Dvor: Music with passion behind it, something with depth.

Dream By Night: I think the current trend is that music isn’t just music anymore, its a culture. The greatest example in my opinion is twenty one pilots. The biggest attribute to their success is making people feel a part of their music, and feeling like they belong to something bigger than a band, but a movement.

RG: What’s the worst thing to happen to music in the last five years? The best?

At Heart: The worst thing to happen to music is probably that music is stressing too much on profit now, and not enough on the music, or the art and emotion that should go into it. The best thing is probably how easy it is nowadays for fans to be able to interact with their favorite bands. That really adds a personal level to music now.

Carev Dvor: No comment.

Dream By Night:The worst thing that has happened in music in the last five years would absolutely be Nicki Minaj, I would rather get shot in the leg than listen to a full song of hers. I really cant say what the best thing has been.

RG: What song should play when you walk into a room?

At Heart: “Miserable at Best” by Mayday Parade, because you know I’m about to walk the floor and ask your girl to dance. And you can make damn sure she’ll say yes.

Carev Dvor: Probably Kye Kye’s “Broke,” I just feel like the groove is just something that can fit any situation.

Dream By Night: Probably “Perfectly Lonely” by John Mayer.
