these songs have us buzzin’ [single reviews]

The Orphan, the Poet – “Still Buzzin'”: This might be TOTP’s strongest single yet. It’s up there with “Thieves Beneath the Bed” for me – though the latter is much more emotional than the former. I mean, you have to expect a song with a title like “Still Buzzin'” to feel a least a little party-like, right? Commercialism is trying to force society into the holiday season straightaway, but this song is still in denial that summer is over. I guess we’ll have to settle for that post-Halloween afterglow.

Talkie – “Fuzzy Disco”: Well, I guess we’ll just continue the theme of bands going more summery-vibey in a time of year where it’s getting colder. Yup, the psych rock group Talkie from San Francisco (who I wish was able to tour to Columbus) is back with a track suitable for dancing that feels like Real Estate gone disco. Dream-disco?

I DON’T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME – “Choke”: This is probably going to go over most folks’ heads, but the first artist I thought of when this track started playing was Columbus-LA transplant Digisaurus. This song is a little more laid back than the lead-off single “Modern Day Cain” but there’s still that little bit of a minor key hinting at surreality.

Captain Kidd – “Stay”: My, we’ve come a long way from “Freaky Love,” baby. This is a new direction for the band that keeps things fun but a little mysterious. I would call this song ornery, even. It definitely suits the fall weather but still is for those who want to party. I saw a session video for this group’s “Mexican Standoff” piece from a few years ago in my YouTube suggested videos tonight and I can’t help but think to myself, “what a contrast!”
