The Orwells – Disgraceland

By Ryan G

First of all “Disgraceland” is a badass name for an album, so props to The Orwells for that.  While we are on the topic of good names, I was actually drawn to originally listening to The Orwells because I thought it was a cool band name, assuming they call themselves that because of George Orwell.  This is the first legit rock & roll album I have heard in a while.  Modern bands seem to be getting more and more into all the subgenres of rock while these guys are just keeping it simple with some good old American rock & roll (no hate intended towards MOST subgenres).

“Southern Comfort” is the first track on the album and it immediately draws you in with a catchy riff, followed by lyrics about getting drunk as you may have guessed by the song title.  Lyrically speaking, a lot of the album seems to be about partying or about women.  That’s not really a bad thing though; I could see a bunch of kids being into it for sure.  “Disgraceland” is awesome musically, it’ll have you bobbing your head the whole time, with a nice mixture of 70’s and 90’s rock influenced jams.

One of my favorite tracks on the album is “Let It Burn”, which comes at about the halfway point.  The song is really catchy as the chorus chants “How many times do I have to tell you and when will you ever learn”.  The Orwells new single/music video for “Who Needs You” seems to have political connotations which I can get with.  I’d say that’s their biggest song so far and definitely one of their best that I’ve heard.

Overall I really like The Orwells’ new album and would recommend picking it up at your local record store or whatever you do to get music these days.  I dig these guys because they seem to be trying to take their style of music back towards its roots.  “Disgraceland” is pretty rad, check it out ASAP!
