The Death of “iLike”

By Ryan G

Who remembers iLike? I didn’t, until I read this article.

iLike was pioneering in the sense that it tried to launch a music service that operated within the Facebook interface.  Now, Spotify has more or less taken over that role (see my earlier app reviews, or check out the new “listen with” feature on Facebook). iLike had a lot going for it, but in my experience some downfalls led to its being taken over by Myspace.  Its biggest disadvantage was its speed.  I found the service to be slow and limiting.  Its fit into artist profiles was a bit awkward, but apparently not awkward enough to prevent millions of users becoming a part of this.  I think it was so popular simply because it entered Facebook at a time where its userbase was expanding exponentially (2009, roughly the time everyone’s parents/grandparents decided they were cool enough to join the site).  That, and it was the FIRST major player to be used on Facebook.  When something is first and has the support of an established entity, of course it will do well.
