Symphony + Thousand Foot Krutch = Success?

By Ryan G

The title asks whether a pairing of a symphony with legendary rockers Thousand Foot Krutch could be considered a success, and the answer seems to be yes. At least, that is what Seattle’s annual Symphony Guild event is betting on.

Every year, the Symphony Guild, led by composer Mateo Messina in Seattle, WA is put on as a charitable way of giving back to the local children’s hospital. The concept does seem a bit bizarre at first glance, though. Read the official event description:

“The Voice of Finnegan Farrell” — a unique Irish-themed concert — is Mateo Messina’s 15th annual fundraising concert presented in support of Seattle Children’s Hospital. Join us in celebrating the enduring voice and unbreakable spirit of Seattle Children’s patients. This concert will feature over 250 performers on stage, including NW Symphony Orchestra, Northwest Boychoir, Seattle Firefighters Pipes & Drums, Seattle Children’s patients, and Thousand Foot Krutch!

What? An Irish themed concert with a children’s choir, bagpipes, a regionally renowned symphony orchestra, a prolific conductor, and a Canadian hard rock band? Does not compute. Undoubtedly the orchestrators of the event know what they’re doing, though. In the past, Alice in Chains has been the guest rock band of choice. It is unclear if Thousand Foot Krutch will be performing in tandem with the orchestra or simply as part of a lineup, but its an unconventional pairing either way. This is definitely the first I’ve heard of a prominent faith-based heavy rock group performing in a classical setting. Pairings with orchestras are nothing new; Metallica recorded its S&M album with the San Francisco Symphony and Coldplay performed “Politik” alongside the New York Philharmonic at the 2003 Grammy Awards. So, good for TFK for joining an elite group. If you live in Seattle and are reading this, want to submit a review and/or photography? Email iamtunedup@gmail.com.
