Sucre – Loner EP

By Ryan G

Indie/alt fans everywhere should be rejoicing at the trifecta that is involved with the project that is Sucre. Produced by Jeremy Larson and MUTEMATH drummer Darren King, Stacey King (known for her role in Eisley as as Darren’s wife) has a musical undertaking that people need to hear. And that project is Sucre. The Loner EP serves as an excellent introduction to the band.

The group just undertook their first ever tour. While Sucre has been stored in my mental “bands to check out” file for quite some time, it was a friend’s description of the show that finally prompted me to remove the proverbial file from the cabinet and read (listen) to the contents.

Fundamentally, the EP is a little all over the place on paper. That is, the instrumentation lands all over the map. Yet oddly, it all fits together in the end. King’s vocal style is the glue that unites the Loner EP. I’m not just talking about the way her voice sounds. It’s the way she carries melodies and enunciates. This is consistent – the other influences are various yet subtle enough not to undermine the mood of the EP.

Darren King drums in the studio recording and his influence is obvious. The deep, booming drums are in constant contrast to Stacey’s high, clear voice. Hints of the ethereal break through in ever so brief moments. “Line of Fire” is a great example of this – the minor key singing, the higher than normal vocal registers interspersed with “normal” pop-like vocals. “Young and Free” plays like a MUTEMATH b-side. I can hear Roy Mitchell-Cardenas grooving on that bass line almost! Counterintuitively, the track “Crazy” is anything but.

Perhaps the attitude of the EP is best summed up in the refrain of “Young and Free”; “I don’t need nobody telling me who to be.” Nope. Here we see another side of Stacey King that shows just as much promise as early era Eisley probably did. My hunch about this band proved correct.
