I had the pleasure to sit down with long time friend Sam Biederman, also known as DJ NuGlo, to talk a little bit about his journey through EDM, and his upcoming gig at Red Club tonight.
Tuned Up: So first and foremost tell me a little bit about the event. What kind of artists are going to be there and what’s your affiliation with the event?
NuGlo: So basically there is this production group called My Best Friends Party. Its an EDM production group here in Columbus and they throw a lot of monthly and weekly parties. One their parties is “Ascension Saturdays” at Red Club. So tonight there will be four artists including myself.
Tuned Up: So it’s all EDM?
NuGlo: Yup it’s all EDM and I guess there is some Hip Hop mixed in but yeah the majority consists of EDM. So Ordinary Funkin People go on, and then myself (NuGlo), Ghost Gardens will follow, and then Alex & Paul will finish the evening.
Tuned Up: So tell me just a little bit about why you started, and what has been your inspiration so far? What is your goal? What kind of dream do you follow?
NuGlo: Well Ive been around music my entire life, playing all sorts of instruments, and finally during my senior year of high school I ended up dabbling a little bit with DJing. I knew I wouldn’t have my own equipment but I was at a point where I really wanted to pursue being a DJ. But after a while I started being pretty pessimistic about it. I really thought that I wouldn’t get anything out of this. But when I finally graduated High School, I was out in Pennsylvania, hanging out with a good friend, and we were talking about our life goals. And she told me “that if everyone sees the goals they want to reach to be unattainable, nobody would even go for them”. So that’s when I really started going for it, and putting everything I got into it. So a few weeks later, I picked up my first controller and stumbled through and started mixing. But I was awful, almost complete trash. I was also wasting a lot of time in Pennsylvania when I could have been focusing on my goals with music. I knew I would be coming back to Ohio, and I told myself I gotta rejuvenate and make a name for myself. And so far I am so thankful for the people that have given me so many wonderful opportunities so far.
Tuned Up: Do you ever have any fears that people won’t react to your stuff? Just knowing me, I would certainly be scared that people wouldn’t be dancing or grooving to my music.
NuGlo: Well I went to this thinking that I’m playing what I want to play. But I also want to please the audience and let them have an awesome time. So I get a feel for the crowd and their reaction and feed off of that. I normally pick the first three songs and then after that I have some kind of idea of what people are thinking and what they want so I go from there. I also have to understand that I am here for other people and it’s their party.
Tuned Up: Are you pretty happy with how things are moving? I see you are at a lot of events, and you seem to network and get yourself out there. Have you learned a lot about the importance of networking in especially the music industry?
NuGlo: I first started out knowing I wanted to play gigs on campus and work my way to more clubs, and so far I’m pretty ahead of my goals by almost a year. I didn’t think that I would move this fast through my timeline. But I know, and this is a little cliché, but it’s the beginning. It’s a big step but I am still so new, and I’m learning and meeting people, and making those connections is so huge especially with EDM.
Tuned Up: Is that what kind of sets you apart you think? I know some people probably don’t have huge goals for themselves, and don’t put forth that kind of effort, but do you think that you charisma is taking you to those bigger places?
NuGlo: yeah I think that some people are okay with just playing house parties, and that’s their gig, they don’t make those efforts to really make DJing their lifestyle, but I think that I have been really working toward my goals, and making those friendships have already been so important to achieving my goals.
Tuned Up: Any information on tomorrow? Admission, and what time you will be going on?
NuGlo: Doors open at 10, and if you’re 21 or over its free before midnight. For 18 to 21 its ten bucks at the door. I can assure that it’s worth it, because it is one of the dopest if not the dopest places to come party.
To DJ NuGlo, I wish you the best in your journey through life, and I hope to see you do what you love for as long as you can. If you happen to read this on Saturday the 24th, make sure you check him out tonight at 11 at Red Club 2885 Olentangy River Road.
