Single feature: Fashion Week – “Dark of the Cinema”

by Lieke Ruesink

Fashion Week recently released a new single, and it’s super catchy!

Want to brighten your day? Check out Fashion Week’s “Dark of the Cinema.” From Columbus, Ohio, Fashion Week is a band whose music covers a range of styles. “Dark of the Cinema” is an upbeat, exciting listen. It’ll make you want to dance.

We had the chance to ask Fashion Week’s lead singer, Jason Turner, a couple of questions about the new single.

TUNED UP: What inspired the lyrics of the song?

Jason Turner: I wanted to write a song about being young and in love and about how complicated relationships can be.

How would you compare the sound of Dark of Cinema to your other songs?

It’s more up-tempo than some of our previous stuff. But I think it’s consistent with the other songs from the new EP, and it still has great bass parts, great guitar parts, and interesting lyrics. Plus, it’s dark and dramatic and that’s very Fashion Week.

The cover art is so cool! How did you go about creating it?

I think the cover is amazing, and I’m really proud of it. I can say that, because I had very little to do with creating it.

My friend David Powers (Instagram here) was the photographer and the visionary behind the photo. I recruited him because he’s super talented and also “vibey” like me. I played him the song and told him I wanted the cover to feel romantic, dangerous, and dark; he then came up with the idea of shooting underwater.

My friend Moriah (Instagram here) was our model, and she was incredible too. Her and David dove underwater about 20 times in a row—which is harder than it sounds—and she was such a pro. It’s not easy to make jumping into a pool with your clothes on look cool and glamorous. But she nailed it, and the photos turned out great.

My job was to stand beside the pool and hold the lights.

Is this song part of an upcoming EP? What else can we expect from Fashion Week?

Yes, this is part of an EP we’re releasing later this year, and we have some very cool shows we’ll be announcing soon.
