Reviewing All Boy / All Girl’s single ‘OK Poncho’

All Boy / All Girl hail from New York, and played my basement last year. They knocked our socks off, and won us over with awesome arrangements, weaving vocals and beaming positive energy.

The intro is slightly dissonant, tightly packed and bouncy. Softly sung, deftly performed and well written vocals lay on top of a well spun, rustic and stringy instrumental section. Around halfway through, reverb’d, strong and clear guitar boomy across the mix. Played on top of the beat, against a double speed, reverberant and plucky bass line, a sparse, well-played and textured stringed instrument.

The drums are light, four-to-the-flour, and driven. The interplay between drums-only dynamics and full band instrumentation is stark, dramatic, and effective. The track is in parts forward leaning, in parts nostalgic to the 2000s, yet somehow at the same time timeless. This would go great on a playlist to suit any occasion, with it’s ‘wake-up!’ quality, bouncy nature, and infectious bubbly nature.
