Pianos Become The Teeth – Keep You

By all accounts the new album, “Keep You” by Pianos Become The Teeth is one that I should be all over. I really enjoyed their previous two releases. “Old Pride” is such an amazing album. It is one of my go to albums. They were a part of a group of bands called “the wave”, which was an in-joke by an emergence of a new crop of bands a few years back that were very close and toured together often. The last reason I should like this album is they have members that are a part of United Nations, which is fronted by Geoff Rickly from the almighty Thursday. So if Geoff has them in his band they have to be good musicians.

“Keep You” is not a bad album by any means. It just is not what I was expecting form this band. It is mellower than what we have heard from this unit. Also gone are the screams from front man Kyle Durfey. I will be the first to admit that he has a decent voice. He has a style that is very soothing. And I can get into that. Going back to what I expected from this band. I expected to feel something. When I listen to music I like to feel and with this release I feel nothing, nothing at all. That is rare for me. Actually I take that back, I get the feeling that they are trying to distant themselves from “the wave”. If that is what they are trying to do, they have done a good job. At the same time they now may be lumped into another group. They may be lumped into that Title Fight/Citizen/Basement group, which is not a bad thing.

Overall this is not a bad album by any means. I just don’t enjoy it at the moment. It may turn out to be one of those albums that grow on me. That was the case with a few of my favorite albums; “Around The Fur” by Deftones, “Make Yourself” by Incubus and “Crash Love” by AFI. All three of those albums grew on me. And now at any given point you can find me rocking out to them. Speaking of The Deftones this album actually reminds of the transition they made on “White Pony” which is one of my all-time favorite albums. This is a band that maybe knew that in order to grow as a band they had to change it up a little. One of the things it does have going for it is that it was produced by Will Yip. He is quickly becoming one of my favorite producers at the moment and that is a good thing. If he continues to have a hand in this young band they will continue to grow and that is something I look forward to.

Score: 2.9/5

Editor’s thoughts: Unlike Mr. Moore here, this album is actually my first foray into the PBTT discography. It doesn’t really grab me terribly strongly, but it is very soothing to listen to. Shoot, I fell asleep to this album the other night. Given where my listening tendencies are at the moment, I predict that by the end of the year I’ll be all over this album. I’m getting a similar feeling to when I first tried out later Thrice…
