I never thought I’d listen to an EP that seamlessly mixed a little bit of twang with Walk the Moon level synths, but Nick D’ and the Believers’ Wanted EP is just that. Based out of Columbus, Ohio, Nick D’ and the Believers are definitely a group to watch due to how carefully stylized each song is. The production and structure of each track is so uniquely theirs that it couldn’t be mistaken for anyone else.
Although it’s not my favorite track I’ve ever heard open an EP, titular track “Wanted” does show that the band knows how to create an engaging song. The repetition towards the end bothers me despite the knowledge of how resonant and powerful it’d likely be live. “Don’t Go” was quick to become my favorite. It taps into a carefree and lighthearted sound that’s perfect to cheer someone up, and the lyrics seem to sing of being ready for a commitment that the other half isn’t quite ready to make yet.
Showing a bit of range, “Mercy, Mercy” tones down on the quick beats to something nice and steady with a wonderful mismatch of piano and Nintendo-esque samples mixing through the track. The buildup starting around 1:40 is chaotic and absolutely the last thing I expected and I loved how it snapped right back into the trends previous to it within a minute.
While much of Nick D’ and the Believers sound is very much so the popular trend in indie music right now, at the same time- they’ve got this heart behind every song that catches the attention of the listener. The first few times of playing the EP I couldn’t pick out anything too special, but upon a few closer listens I could pick out bits and pieces that were far above the standard. This EP is definitely worth the money and the listen, especially if you’re looking for a new band for you and your best friends to fall in love with.
