move a little, think a little (single reviews)

Ki:Theory – “If You Don’t Care / Fake It”: In another world, Glass Animals might record a song like this. The song is sensual and abrasive. Don’t settle too much into the beats or you the constant twists and turns might make you regret it. Oh, and it’s pronounced “Key Theory.”

Jai Wolf – “Indian Summer”: This song makes me think of the technique Porter Robinson uses in some of his tracks on “Worlds.” Artificial vocals, if you will. Actually, this song sounds like it was influenced by both Robinson and M83. It gets a little shrill in moments, but it’s weird enough to keep you coming back for more. The emphasis doesn’t seem to be the bass, although there is a definite groove.

Cordelia and the Buffalo – “Free”: This band’s music is as colorful as the get ups they don for their live video, which can be seen below. I’d like to see this song be performed at Electric Forest Festival, or at least in the Rainforest Cafe at Disney World. Can we make that happen? I don’t experience music with electronic elements and marimbas too often, so that’s cool.

Gemini Club – “Fret and Regret”: Gemini Club places a bit of an industrial twist on the increasingly saturated dance rock market. Having Red Bull Records on their side is a darn good asset though. Think of this song as tribal rock from the future. Clap along and enjoy.

Tearjerker – “Obviously Wrong”: In case you were overwhelmed by the more upbeat tracks earlier, here’s something a little out of the mainstream to slow it down. “Obviously Wrong” gives me a visual of some mellowed out rockers playing in the corner of a dark lounge, having matured past the days of exaggerated swagger yet still displaying hints of the DIY grit that got them going in the first place.

Marco With Love – “Tidal Wave”: “I think you really ought to know, I’ll never be the status quo” the frontman sings in the first lines of what actually is a pretty straightforward song. The song leans away from the status quo in other ways. The aesthetic of the band combined with the song creates a clash. What I’m hearing is warm, but has ethereal undertones that reflect the imagery in the band’s artwork.
