LEAST OF THESE-WOLVES

One of the aspects I love about music so much is how it can make a person feel.  This seems to be a common theme in my world. Back in 2013, I was introduced to a band from Denton, TX called Least of These. I was instantly a fan. At that point in my life, I was on a different journey than the one I am now, and they were the perfect soundtrack. You see at that point in my life I was in school working on my degree in ministry. I spent many nights doing homework and listening to Least of These, as their words seemed to always coincide with whatever I was working on at that moment. On a few occasions, I even included them in my school work, once I quoted a few of their songs in a paper and another time I used their song, “Filthy Man” as inspiration for a sermon I had to write. So needless to say this band means a lot to me. Even if my journey in life has changed.

When I got this EP I was not sure what to expect as I knew it was going to be a little different. I just did not know how different. Turns out I had nothing to be worried about, as Wolves has all the elements I have come to enjoy about this band. The lyrical content and intensity is still very much present.

The opening track, “Creo” starts with just a guitar and some bells. And it’s very soothing, around the 40-second mark the rest of the band kicks in alongside the screamed vocals I am used to. Right away I’m hit with some feelings. Right away I feel as if someone has been reading my thoughts. It goes, “My mind is racing, there’s no more sleeping, my brain is fried and my ears are bleeding, what do you want me to say? What do you want me to say to you? I’m not sure, I’m not sure, I’m not sure that I know who I am anymore.” That is something I have been feeling for far too long. And to hear that in a song was a little comforting to me. That’s what this band does, they comfort you with their real life honest lyrics.  The next track is, “Overcast”. Again we get some truthfulness. There is a line that goes, “Beauty lives inside of this world, but chaos has won, oh of course it won, So let’s glorify what we have done, let’s glorify what we have done”.  There is so much in this world that is beautiful but we tend to get caught up in all the other things going on around us. We need to focus on the good that we have and the good we do. That intensity I was talking about above is also present on this track. With the subject matter, you have to come across as intense in order to get your point across sometimes and it works very well here. On the title track “Wolves” we again to hear that intensity I like so much from this band. The nice thing about their intensity is it’s just the instruments. They tend to go from calmness to chaos with the drop of a dime and it’s a thing of beauty. The EP ends with “Cadence” which is the heaviest and longest track on the Ep. It comes in at a little over 5 minutes. Typically I get lost in songs that long but these guys manage to keep my interest the duration of the song. Around the 1:50 mark we get some sick gang vocals that repeat throughout the song.

So if you like your music, to be honest, and heartfelt then you very well may enjoy this release. I know I can’t stop listening to it myself. Also if you are a fan of My Epic or later As Cities Burn, you will enjoy this EP.

Score: 4.5/5
