James and the Drifters – All That Gold

By Koli Meadows

James And The Drifters is an Indiana based rock/folk band.  I think their LP All That Gold is a good album for late spring/early summer. It is very inspirational and I think it will be great to listen to when all the flowers are budding and the grass is new and green again; to help shake off the last of the winter blues. Or, it could be a great album to remind us of the hope of warm days ahead throughout the winter. This just depends on if you are a cup half full or half empty type of person.

The title track All That Gold is a great track; you can definitely see how it became the title track. It is a little heavier on the alternative/rock side of the album. It’s one of those tunes that help you push that reset button of pursuing material possessions and reminds you that love is really the only thing that matters when it’s all said and done. It has super catchy hooks that stick in your head long after the song is over and definitely the track I keep going back to listen to again and again.

Morning Light is another song I kept listening to. It shows more of their folky side (which as a folk musician I love). It’s a little more stripped down than some of the other songs, but lyrically one of the stronger songs. It really showcases their versatility, and also has a beautiful touch of slide guitar in it. The song has a slow build throughout that comes into a great ending. This leads right into Bigtime, the song I found to be the strongest vocally on the album. It reminded me a lot of when I heard Landon Pigg’s first album.

The All That Gold album made me really want to see James and The Drifters live. I think they are one of those bands that would really shine in a live show setting with their blend of music styles I’m sure they can keep a captive audience. James and the Drifters are definitely worth a listen, or two, or three.
