INTERVIEW: ARTISTRY

Photo: Reed Costello / Words: Ray Cobra

Over the past decade or so, I have lived the life of a nomad so to speak. In that time I have lived in five states, one of them twice, Ohio. What on earth would invoke someone to move that many times? Simple, work of course. The only one that was not for work was my first time here in Ohio, that was personal and it did not pan out. But I stayed. Why did I stay? Again, simple, music and friends. When I moved back to Ohio a few years later the reason was for work to start but it turned again to music and friends. I have always been a little odd, a little different, a little off. But there were a few things that made life enjoyable for me, those were/are, friends, music, and soccer. So when moving it helps if some of those things are present, it makes it easier.

My music of choice for as long as I can remember has been pop-punk. I remember been mesmerized by Green Day’s “Basket Case” video, I wanted dreads like Dexter from The Offspring and of course I wanted to wear a leather jacket like The Ramones. Then something happened my friend showed me Dude Ranch by Blink-182 and my world was never the same. It finally was about the music. I could relate to what Mark and Tom were singing about. A few years later I was introduced to this band from Florida called A New Found Glory, yes at that point they still had the A. That was the band that really changed everything for me. To this day I am still a NFG fan, as they are my favorite pop-punk band. This summer on warped I got to see them with two of my best friends and that was the best set all day, simply because it was with best friends. All that was missing was pizza. So how does this tie in, keep reading and you’ll see.

In my time here in Columbus, pop-punk has never been the scene to talk about. Maybe at one point it was but not in my years, at least up until now. Don’t get me wrong there has been pop-punk bands but not to the point to were it was really a scene. That has changed. And is still changing. Over the past two years there has been a growth of pop punk bands in Columbus. Which makes this guy very happy. Not only that but they have places to play and they do quite often. John Rausch from BravoArtist has made sure of that. He also does a good job of bringing in touring bands. Bands that want to come back. That is a good sign of a good scene. The scene here has become a little family, one that supports each other. No matter who is playing, you can count on members or even whole bands at the shows supporting each other. And in the process bonds have been formed and also bands. It is because of this that Artistry came to be. They one of the newest pop-punk bands to burst onto the scene. They also are one of the youngest. So if you don’t know Artistry, here you go.
