History’s History – This Isn’t Fun Anymore

By Ray Moore

History’s History is a band that is not new to Tuned Up. They actually were the first local band I reviewed 2 years ago. And their vocalist/guitarist, Griffen Holt was my first interview, also two years ago. In a short two years History’s History has changed and grown in so many ways. They are without a doubt building a loyal following here in Columbus and this writer could not be any happier.

This isn’t Fun Anymore is the second release by these intense emo rockers. And right away one can tell this is not the same band. As a matter of fact it is not. They started as a 4 piece but now are a 3 piece. In the middle of last year they split with their bassist and guitarist. They then add Matt Silea of Graves. fame on bass. They band is rounded out by drummer Kevin Eby. The change was noticeable the first show I saw this line-up. Afterwards I remember telling Griffen how excited I was to hear the new songs recorded.

“Man Overcomes as He Burns” starts off the album. It is calm piece that begins with some subtle guitar playing and then vocals are added to bring the song to life, vocals that are sung by Giffen and screamed by Matt, which add a little more to the song. After the line “What if I choose the wrong door when I leave?” is said for a second time, the drums kick in and the song goes into a different direction. The next song, “Knowledge is Power” picks up the pace. It comes in like a wrecking ball. The element that sticks out about this song is it shows the cohesiveness of this band. The way Griffen and Matt intertwine their vocals are top notch. They feed off each other very well. The drumming on this track is downright scary. Kevin Eby has upped his game and it is on display here. This song also has one of my favorite lines on the album, “I’m not afraid of death, I’m afraid I’ll live too long”. My favorite song, “Pros and Cons of Living in Lighthouse” could very well be a love song. You know, I think it is. Any who it has the makings of a classic emo song. I can see myself listening to it back in 2002 while posting on live journal. From the title of the song to the vocals to the lyrics. This song actually has one my favorite lines I’ve heard in a long time, “I won’t tell you I love you for fear you’ll say it back. If I’m being honest, I don’t like how I’ll react”. It is lines like that, that get stuck in your head and eats you alive. It makes you feel and think at the same time.

From start to finish this album is on point. It is has some of the best lyrics you’ll hear. That’s mainly because they are honest and relatable. Music is missing that now. And again the change in this band was needed. They have become the band they were meant to be. If you ever get the chance go see them live as well. You will be blown away.

Score: 5/5
