Hibou – self titled

By Ryan G

Hibou’s self titled record could be summed up as a fun composition full of driving, jangly bedroom pop tunes and that should be enough information to get you on board.

But, where’s the fun in that?

Music journalists are innundated with press copies of upcoming music releases almost daily, and Tuned Up is no exception. From the artist’s point of view, it is somewhat of a crapshoot when it comes to getting blogs to choose their music for coverage. I just happened to be in the mood for downloading something completely new for review one afternoon, and Hibou was the first artist to jump out at me. I can’t quite articulate why, they just did. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I’m intrigued by the ambiguity of “bedroom pop” as a genre descriptor.

When I think of the enviroment of my community while previewing this album, I realize that Hibou has crafted an unlikely soundtrack to the hustle and bustle of the start of a new school year. The music isn’t one hundred percent fun and games, kind of like how the fall chill, though pleasant, is a hint at the coming winter. That said, people tend to be over summer at this point in time and driving force of the music exudes an innate excitement that cannot be denied. It’s a surreal sort of excitement, but it’s there. A Consequence of Sound author notes the band’s ability to capture “the competing ideas of the indoors and outdoors” – something every student in the peak of the autumn weathers knows all too well.

Shout out to the band’s ability to craft 80’s inspired hooks. Even as I listen to the album now, the melody from opener “Dissolve” bounces around my cranium.

Hibou’s self titled record was a stab in the dark for me that ended up paying off. I hope the band makes their way through the Midwest soon.
