Gatto Black Debuts With “8 Days A Week”

Sal Mastrocola of EXNATIONS has released his first single today under the Gatto Black moniker. Unlike the danceable synth-pop he’s become known for, this project is decidedly heavier, punchier, and perfectly captures the anxiety of our current circumstances in the context of catchy hardcore.

In some ways “8 Days A Week” is a lockdown anthem. Its title suggests the sense of loss of time, with everything feeling prolonged and blended together on repeat. The lyrics nail this notion quite well. “I wake up, I’m doing nothing. I’m always busy doing nothing,” Mastrocola opens. “Just doing the same thing for months, just eating the same thing for months.” It’s a sentiment that hits close to home. There are some comedic quips here as well: “Can you see my screen?”

Musically, Mastrocola channels the best of hardcore punk greats. There’s punchy bass, dissonant guitar, and a heap of wall-kicking energy present here. Mastrocola’s pairs lethargic clean vocals with biting screams. This is definitely a unique combo, but he nails it. It’s hard to believe this is a solo project as it’s certainly on par with what full bands are putting out. Needless to say, this is a great introduction to the project and it’s certainly a song that encapsulates the ennui of being stuck at home and scraping by motivationally.
