fresh tune meanderings [single reviews]

By Ryan G

Ramsey – “Pay”: The LA based artist has released a sultry tune that seems to be gaining quite a bit of traction on Soundcloud. The producer and singer has a vocal range that I’m not used to hearing for an artist that plays double duty in this genre. The mood is a little hard to pin down in this song, although the vibe is consistent. For whatever reason, I am continually fascinated by artists in this genre, though the field is getting increasingly saturated. Ramsey doesn’t appear to be succumbing to the “dime a dozen” curse!

Hellsingland Underground – “As Dreams Go By”: I’m going to be transparent here. When I see a band called Hellsingland Underground advertised from an email from clearly European domain, and the title has “dreams” in it, I’m expecting some form of experimental black metal. Am I really hearing a Swedish Americana band? Kudos fella, kudos. But the song goes beyond merely breaking a stereotype. I find the song to be quite enjoyable, honestly. Like any good upbeat Americana tune, the song uses sparingly yet effectively a bit of “twang” and just warms the heart, to be blunt.

Antoine Diligent – “Reasons”: The dream pop artist releases a dazzling jam in “Reasons,” in a song that draws you in like a siren from the get-go. Except the song ends in satisfaction rather than an untimely death. Antoine Diligent is the alter-ego of LA artist Anthony Polcino, a self-described easy-listening musician. Whether or not this appeals to the stereotypical easy-listening demographic is questionable, though the tune is certainly easy on my ears.

WOLFIE’S JUST FINE – “I Forgot”: The folk rock track we have here is catchy yet slightly jarring. The Montreal band works their slightly unconventional verse structure to their advantage, creating a song that sort of sneaks up on you in the way it gets in your head.
