Digisaurus – No More Room For Love

By Ryan G

It’s hard to know how to fill up a 300-ish word review when one band accomplishes a task consistently and cleanly. Digisaurus is one such band.

James Allison, the frontman of the band, contributed to my life’s soundtrack during a key transition period in my life. The summer of 2011 I had just graduated from college and moved back in with my parents, who had themselves just moved out of my childhood home. Early on that summer, I would listen to the “5 spot” on what was then CD101 (I think it hadn’t changed yet) on the way home from work. A song by Allison’s then band, The Town Monster, called “One Thousand Wolves” encouraged me to get my groove on and served as my introduction to the local scene in Columbus.

The Town Monster ended soon after the preceding events took place. It’s encouraging that four years later Digisaurus would emerge from the musical workshop to become the soundtrack to my summer. Allison giving us a project that feels different and a bit more defined, in a period where I too am feeling a bit more comfortable with adulthood.

No More Room For Love hides commentary and off kilter musings on love under a blanket of synths, funky riffs, and sensual vocals. If you are thinking this sounds like it could be describing cliche music of a vintage porn video, well, you’re wrong. That’s not sensual – that’s just dumb. “Two Steps” could be described as seductive sounding, I suppose, but it should make you dance. Actually, so should every song on this album. “Without Me” has a funky bass line that takes the lead instrumentally, backed by some “here and there” effects that are almost psychedelic in feel. Weird and ethereal. The title track is as much an intro to the band as it is the intro to the EP, choosing to dwell on one simple melody which becomes the theme of the track, rather than a traditional song structure. My favorite tune is the first single “Make A Move”, which made my personal top 100 songs released in 2014. The hook combined with the robotic synths is just badass.

Also, I saw the band perform at Spacebar amidst lasers and groovy outfits. I just wish that venue had a bit more low end in that mix. They were cool though!

I look forward to what Digisaurus has planned for the future, definitely.
