Crowd-sourced reviews: M83 – “Do It, Try It”

By Ryan G

How can you not be intrigued by an artist that puts out a single as poignant and epic as “Midnight City”? We asked some of our friends what they had to say about the new single from the French electronica artist.

“I went from slightly unsure to very quickly absolutely loving it! I think it’s different, fun, creative and catchy AF.” – Stephanie Maskimow, publicist at Catalyst PR

It’s no Midnight City, but it’s still pretty fire. Sounds like it should be in Drive 2.” – The Saylor, of V!bes

“Really digging the synth line at the end. All in all, a pretty catchy track.” – Michael Belt, Tuned Up contributor

“I like it. Has a futuristic intergalactic electro pop feel to it.” – Mitch Lang, Christian Rockers United administrator.

“In high school I used to say “I want to lose my virginity to M83.” sadly I lost my virginity watching “Battle Royale” instead. A seasoned M83 fan, I find the instrumentation and honkytonk piano in the new single is outside the usual relm M83 explores, but the category of instruments is so related in the usual retro keys family it actually makes perfect sense to be incorporated. The opening line states that this is something new and thats what it delivers. The complexity across the arrangement is an epic in structure for being a brief three and a half minutes. The classic and familiar wash of saw synth tones kick in hard as always…it’s M83….it’s creative…it’s key heavy….and it sounds damn good.” – Jesse Cale, composer.

Surprisingly, in my inquiry on social media, no one had anything overly negative to say about the track. While the quirkiness did throw me off at first listen, the more I listen the more I enjoy it. “Something new” meets classic M83 is dead on. That album art though… I might have nightmares later.  -RG
