Concert Review + Photography: The Saturday Giant tour kickoff at Kobo (Columbus, OH)

By Ryan G

Evening lineup: The Saturday Giant | The Lost Revival | The Whiles

Having seen The Saturday Giant, the one man band project of musician extraordinaire Philip Cogley at the Columbus Alive showcase a few weeks prior, I knew his last show in Columbus before touring the US would be one not to miss. My presuppositions were correct, and I was introduced to two more groups in the heavily saturated Columbus music scene, both full of talent.

The Whiles have been around for a while, and performed a solid set of tracks mostly from their October 2012 release Somber Honey. While their Facebook page classifies the band as indie folk rock, make no mistake – these veterans of the local scene can and will rock hard. Their lead guy eventually stepped out from behind the security of his acoustic guitar, getting down to the nitty gritty by singing on the riser at the front of the stage, eyes closed and kneeling at the spectators.

The Lost Revival are another hidden gem in Ohio’s capital. Their genre defies description, but they put on an addictive live show. Jazz, funk, rock, and some alternative all fuse together in a way that won’t leave your thoughts for days. At least, that’s what happened with me after their performance. Kevin Collins’ soulful vocals and energy kept the onlookers moving, and his better half Kelly Kefauver rocked a sax nearly the size of her petite frame. Drummer Chris Cheeseman (the name listed on the band page) could barely sit still, even between songs. The dude had no inhibitions.

Finally Philip Cogley played a solid set consisting of mostly cuts from his EP When Death Comes. “No Mathematician” opened the set with its irresistible combo of beat boxing and synthesized percussion creating an underlying beat. A few awesome covers made appearances as well, including The Pixies‘ “Where Is My Mind?” and a rendition of “Television” by You Won’t, by request of Kobo owner Jacob Wooten. Props also go to Cogley’s parents, who stuck around in the thick of the crowd all the way to the end of the evening – we even got to sing happy birthday to his dad, who turned 65 that day. “When Death Comes” ended the evening in a drawn out jam session that left everyone wanting more. A satisfactory evening!

Cool review. No jive, Chris Cheeseman is the man’s actual name and it is very befitting a man of his appetite.
