V!bes – “Against the Waves”: I have to say, even though I’m starting to feel familiar with this song, hearing this after writing out some responses to some huge songs is therapeutic. The band’s knack for penning cute, fun, relaxing summery tunes doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Some subtle reverb in the guitarwork does give the feeling of frolicking amongst some frothy surf. V!bes recently flew out to the east coast to play some tunes for Camp PINK (sponsored by Victoria’s Secret) and if they keep cranking out songs like this the opportunities will keep coming. V!bes sound is marketable, fun, and “Against the Waves” seems to be a step toward further fleshing out of it!

But quite surreal, and full of sort of half whisper/half singing vocals that are begging to be parodied. I wouldn’t call this gothic or darkwave, but this is kind of unsettling. Oh, and they’re covering the Chainsmokers! That’s the second time today I’ve heard an unlikely cover. Johan Angergard of The Legends told BrooklynVegan “I read in an interview with Chainsmokers that they wanted to make it super authentic. My take is the complete opposite. I love the combination of something that sounds fragile and naked and artificial at the same time.” Mission accomplished, sir, mission accomplished.
