Audiofeed 2017 preview: Quiet Entertainer

By Ryan G

My first experience with the mysterious dude known as the Quiet Entertainer was in a small venue in Lansing, Michigan about four years ago. A spur of the moment trip to see Mutemath and Paper Route play a tiny room proved to be memorable in many ways, but also because of the discovery of a new producer.

Seeking out live electronic sets isn’t usually my forte, but I’ve harbored a growing appreciation for the art in recent years. In Columbus, I once got to see Obi-Wan Shinobi and Satele perform killer back to back sets at a DIY music festival, and in that light I’m excited to see Quiet Entertainer perform once again at Audiofeed.

As you might guess, Quiet Entertainer has developed a distinct onstage persona that involves not speaking to the crowd, for the most part. What stands out to me about him, other than his aptitude remixing some songs that I love with original compositions, is how genuine his reactions to the crowd seem to be at shows.

Get to know him a little more before his Audiofeed set, below:

Tuned Up: What’s your favorite Audiofeed memory? If you haven’t been yet, what are you looking forward to?

Quiet Entertainer: My favorite memory was seeing Analecta two years ago. That set was the best thing I saw in two years of being there. I just had no idea who they were so I was just bumming around the fest checking out bands. I remember really tired and thinking, “well, I guess I’ll sit down and check out this band… who are they?” The rest is history. I’m looking forward to another surprise music discovery.

If any band that no longer exists could headline a show you play, who would it be?

The band woud be Earthsuit. I know that members of Earthsuit have gone on to do other bands. But I’d love to be a part of that show. Not even for me to be on the show, just for them to have found a way to make music again.

What records and/or songs have had heavy rotation these past few months for you?

Ive been listening to Kendrick Lamar’s new album. Also been listening to The Range. the Potential album. Don’t know if it’s new or not. Melodic beats and stuff. So great. And then, Teeko is probably the guy I’ve been listening to the most. So much music on soundcloud. I did go through a Washed Out phase at the beginning of the year. So that was enjoyable too.

Describe your music with language as if you’re ordering a five course meal.

Interesting. So I guess my music is kind of like… Lasagna… served with an appetizer of shrimp cocktail, side of collard greens, and chocolate mousse pie.

Do you remember the first album you purchased/received? What was it?

My first cassette I had was MC Hammer’s Please Hammer Don’t Hurt Em album.

Who on the Audiofeed lineup (other than your band), has a don’t miss set? You can only pick one (or two).

So, I’m actually going to be deejaying for Spoken Nerd (& probably Royal Ruckus) in addition to doing my own set. However as a fan, I am looking forward to seeing J. Givens since I missed him last year, and I’m very curious to see nobigdyl. John Reuben will be a lot of fun too.

Have you ever come across an exceptionally good (or bad) tattoo job? What was it?

Nothing comes to mind. I see so many tattoos now that my mind just glosses over them. I can’t remember the last time I thought “Wow, what a great tattoo.” I’d say the key for me as an onlooker is that I hope they don’t overdo it. I don’t know where that line is but I know it when I see it.

Are there any summer movies you’re especially looking forward to this year?

Spiderman is coming out this summer. But really it’s all about Star Wars Episode 8 at the end of the year. Nothing else matters.

What’s the ONE THING your music is trying to communicate to the world?

My music is instrumental so. So I don’t have any lyric themes I’m trying to communicate. But I want the world to know that whatever thing you are put on this earth to do: Go for it. Give it all you got. And enjoy the pursuit of that thing. Because it’s the pursuit that is the gift, moreso than the result. And if you do that with God, then He will use you and be with you.
