Review: The Out, The Vessels, Conversion Delay, The Worn Flints at Skully’s Music Diner 5/27/14

My buddies alerted me, repeatedly, about a free show at Skully’s featuring The Out, The Vessels, Conversion Delay and The Worn Flints.

J.D. of TV/CD gave me a ride. We showed up early.

Watched the first two bands set up. The Vessels back lined gear while The Out stood at the ready, instruments in hand.

The Out are currently training a new drummer. In the interim they’re playing acoustic sets at shows.

The crowd was amazing. “Free Entry” only applied to over 21’s, unders paid $5, but they didn’t seem to mind.

I’ve seen The Out a few times. I appreciate the lead guitarists meanderings, and I’ve unfortunately only seen them without a drummer, and I’d love to see their drum backed set.

The Vessels are old hands. This was the second time I’d seen their new guitarist in the lineup. J.D. (bassist) and Jason (rhythm guitarist/lead singer) really shone. You couldn’t see him from the floor but Cody (drummer) was pounding out the rhythms in the back.

TV has put alot of work into their live show and it shows.

Columbus is an amazing incubator or local bands. We build bands up, support while they hone their craft, and give them send offs as they make their way onto tours of the region/nation/world. It’s an amazing system.

Conversion Delay followed. Nathaniel (singer/guitarist/keyboardist) has an insane set of pedals. Two full boards. Nick (drummer) plays an electric drumset which I couldn’t help but ask him a million questions about. J.D. (bassist) had just played with The Vessels, but lost no steam.

The new material is awesome, but the older favorites still rip, like 4AM.

CD’s currently recording their second album in Athens OH.

The Worn Flints closed the night.

During setup a crowd of fans hugged the stage railing in anticipation. Excitement follows “The Flints”.

The performance was a typical Flints show, screaming guitar solos, plodding and effective bass lines, driving drum beats and songs that phased in and out of deep grooves. Kenny (singer/guitarist/keyboardist) made frequent stops at his keyboard.

The night ended early, but perhaps not for a Tuesday. The crowd was happy. The bar staff content.
