Boy Epic – “Wicked”

This artist isn’t for everyone. Passion is definitely present in this sad yet powerful song though. Desperate vocals, backed by strings and a simple, thundering drum beat make the backbone of the song. One commenter on the Youtube stream of the music video described being moved to tears. This song didn’t move me that way, but I can see how that might happen for some people.

Jackie Venson – “WICKERSHAM LN”

Soft, light vocals accentuate a tune that carries a strangely heavy undertone. Perhaps it’s the pensive, slightly whimsical imagery portrayed in the music video for the song, that does it. I dig the soulful vocals though. As cliche as it sounds, I could see myself listening to this on a drive home from work on a rainy day. The whistling doesn’t feel contrived, and the melody feels fresh. You have to love these random discoveries.

Seagulls – “Santa’s Little Helper”

I’m not sure how to categorize this genre. With the pop punk meets post-hardcore guitar work, I was expecting different vocals. Gang vocals in the chorus mixed with mostly rough vocals were not what I anticipated. Oddly enough, this works. Who would have thought a nearly 100% rough vocals tune could fit a verse chorus verse structure this well? Check out this upbeat song and get confused by their stupidly fun music video.

Vice on Victory – “You Tell Me I’m Wrong”

After getting to know the band personally for a while now, I’m happy to say there’s finally a public recording that features the new vocalist Drake Myers. Myers’ singing is the highlight of the track, for sure. While I’m not in love with the song personally, I do find it to be catchy and of solid production. I do wish the guitars were more prominent in the mix though. In the meantime, check out the song and try to get that chorus out of your head!
