Review: Silversun Pickups – The Singles Collection (2014)

Since the release of their debut EP Pikul (July of 2005) Silversun Pickups has been a huge hit with a lot of people. After their first two records Carnavas and Swoon I just hoped they wouldn’t fall apart on their next record. Their most recent record Neck of the Woods was absolutely phenomenal, and satisfied my ears in every way I hoped for. I still jam that album at least once a month to this day. When I heard they were releasing a new record I was very excited. Honestly, to hear it was a singles collection I was a bit disappointed. Of course The Singles Collection will consist of every single they have had from Pikul to Neck of the Woods along with their new hit single  “Cannibal” and an exclusive B-side from their 2009 album Swoon called “Devils Cup.”

Am I excited? Somewhat. Their new single “Cannibal” also disappointed me a bit. It sounds so much like their last record I almost thought it was an unreleased track when I first heard it. I was hoping for something a little bit more tasty and surprising. I’m glad they aren’t trying to do anything too crazy and change their sound or something like that though. In my point of view they’re releasing this record too soon. Usually bands release a “Greatest hits” or “Singles collection” after they’ve come out with a good amount of studio albums. I personally think they should be releasing a record with their favorite songs off their previous albums on it. There are songs on every record that are better than the singles they had released off of them and I think those songs deserve to be noticed more. Maybe they are planning to release a new record in the next year or so? Or maybe this is just to buy them some more time. Either way, they picked a horrible date to release this because Beck’s Morning Phase is also being released that day. So we all know who’s going to get more album sales that day. Regardless, Silversun Pickups is one of the best alternative bands to step in to the indie music scene in the past fifteen years. If you haven’t dug into them yet, this is a good chance to start.
