Another newbie to the fast growing music extravaganza Worst Kept Secret Fest, Something Keen, will be sure to put on an engaging, somewhat unpredictable performance of high energy progressive rock come mid April. If you’re in the area, make sure you are at the Dude Locker early. This trio is determined to melt faces. Read our interview with the band below and get more stoked.

IATU: If the band had a token drink what would it be?

Something Keen: Cheap gas station gallon water jugs affectionately known to us as “Man Jugs.”

If the band had a mission statement, what would it be?

To steal the legendary fire of the rock gods and crack the world’s shell of lameness with the musical hammer of awesome! Or…play original music and never not love doing it.

What’s the band’s history with Worst Kept Secret Fest? How did you hear about it?

This will be our first time there. We got clued in when we moved from a practice space in Grandview over to Dude Locker. Once we found what WKSF was all about, we knew we had to get in on it.

How have you been coping with the unusually brutal winter in Columbus this year?

The cavernous, metal-walled utopia that is Dude Locker has been anything but forgiving this winter, but once you get the fingers going and warmed up, the body follows soon after.

What has been dominating your playlist(s) lately?

We’re pretty different in that regard, so we’ll split it up.

Steve: The Samuel Jackson Five, Math the Band, Eye, Kvelertak, Between the Buried and Me, and Hot Karate.

James: Young the Giant, The 1975, A Day to Remember, Bombay Bicycle Club, and Daft Punk.
Rob: Daft punk, Neil Young, Foo Fighters, and Sleigh Bells

Why should someone be excited about the live experience of Something Keen?

We’re finally hitting our stride as far as our stage performance goes. It’s all about getting some crazy energy going and then dancing it out. Our last show had in-crowd guitar solos and power-stance drumming—it was all one big party.

How have you been encouraged or discouraged by the changing music industry landscape? What do you think Columbus needs the most, in that vein?

Since almost anyone can make an album these days, it can be very easy to get stuck at the bottom, and that can be frustrating. That said, the growing DIY attitude is awesome. I love the idea that we’re all in this together, so let’s just get out there and play.

Columbus definitely needs some more diverse venues and a lot more quality music journalism like you guys.

Who would play the ideal festival that Something Keen has a supporting slot in?

That’s a tough one since we don’t really have a nailed down sound, so anyone from the Foo Fighters, to Ben Folds, to even Franz Ferdinand.

Who is next to break out of the Columbus market, in your opinion?

Hmmm… there are a ton of bands that should be huge. Bands like The Apes, Eye, and Brujas del Sol are doing awesome original stuff. Chinese School and Bummers come to mind as well.
