Worst Kept Secret Fest V preview – Seaside Holiday

By Ryan G

Seasideholiday

So, IATU has become increasingly enamored with the bands they’ve been exposed to via the growing and changing free local (and now regional) Worst Kept Secret Fest in Columbus. The band has an emphasis on highlighting a cross-section of the local music scene, but is beginning to draw the attention of regional bands. One such band is electronic/chillwave/ambient rock band Seaside Holiday from Ashland, who have worked with Ronnie Martin, known for his prolific creepy moog-based synth pop, released over many years on Tooth and Nail Records under the moniker Joy Electric. The Beach House inspired band granted some time to one of our pre-festival Q&As, listen to them as you read:

IATU: Where should someone take a seaside holiday, if money was no object?

Seaside Holiday: Maybe Charles Mill Marina when the fish smell isn’t bad…

If the band had a token drink what would it be?

That would be the Vegas Viper – Hawaiian Punch and vodka… or a sensible glass of warm milk.

If the band had a mission statement, what would it be?

Is this where we say “Carpe Diem, Never Change, LYLAS”? … I never was very outstanding with these even in high school year books… ummm… We exist to chronicle a mortal trek through a fleeting life by way of tones and timbre. Sharing and partaking in the vast array of music that is within our reach is what provides a colorful back drop to a sometimes bleak landscape. (will that fit on the back of a t shirt?)

What’s the band’s history with Worst Kept Secret Fest?

We heard of it through a few bands we’ve played with. As great supporters of these types of festivals, we are extremely excited to make our debut this year.

How did you hear about it?

It’s not like it was a secret…

How have you been coping with the unusually brutal winter in Columbus this year?

Cara: well, we’re an hour north of the glorious southern landscapes of Columbus, so our arctic sensibilities are well established. I’d chalk it up mostly to snowshoeing and the sled dogs…

Morgan: Warming my hands over the soft electronic hum of a synth.

What has been dominating your playlist(s) lately?

Cara: Tegan and Sara – “Heartthrob”, Death – “For the Whole World to See”, “Warpaint” (self titled)

Morgan: Norma Jean – “Redeemer”, Sufjan Stevens – “The Age of Adz” mewithoutyou – “Ten Stories”

Why should someone be excited about the live experience of Seaside Holiday?

Sand, surf, synthesizers, scintillating conversation, statuesque stage presence…the list goes on (but that may be the end of alliteration). Our complete lack of pyrotechnics and onstage antics.

How have you been encouraged or discouraged by the changing music industry landscape?

The slow collapse of the record industry that stood as we were growing up has created a lot of opportunities for the “common man”. As technology has created the possibility of endless bedroom recordings, and consequential freedom, the artist has a near-complete creative control, thus opening the parameters of music back up. However, it’s further flooded and blurred the ability to stand out in a sea of indie artists.

What do you think Columbus needs the most, in that vein?

More festivals like WKSF and more collaboration between bands.

Who would play the ideal festival that Seaside Holiday has a supporting slot in?

If we were dreaming, it would be an eclectic mix of everything from Gary Numan to Social Distortion to Cut Copy to Kate Bush … and of course of the headliner would be a reunited Smiths.

Who is next to break out of the Columbus market, in your opinion (besides Seaside Holiday)?

The Ohio State Buckeyes – Those guys could go far.
