In the mailbox: Father Sculptor, Typesun

by Ryan G on Sep 11, 2012 • 11:13 pm No Comments

Father Sculptor is the moniker of an eccentric alternative project that reached out to I AM TUNED UP from the UK recently. The band is relentlessly touring the British Isles. Listening to the advance of their single “Dysmirror” creates a tension that is released and almost instantaneously rewound throughout the odd track. Odd theatrical vocals fade in and out – they may even turn some people off to the group. But the effect is obviously deliberate and not that of a wannabe avant-garde artist. Mood-wise, I’m reminded of Phil Elverum’s Mount Eerie musical endeavor – while Mount Eerie is less uptempo, it carries the same undertone of something being ever-so-slightly off-kilter, but deliberately so. Check out their bandcamp here to listen for yourself.

Typesun (official Facebook page here), introduced to us by the same team that brought us BassDrumSnareDrum, is a Bristol, UK based producer, drummer, and DJ. Presented to us and the world is “Heart Maths”, a new single from Typesun featuring fellow Bristol musician Guido. The single has been described in this way:

‘Heart Maths’, the first single from Typesun, came together out of writing sessions with long-time collaborator & Bristol legend Guido. The track presents a complementary mixture of the two artists’ trademark palettes: Guy’s rambunctious MIDI instrumentation & fierce square waves over Type’s signature rugged drum production & cinematic attention to detail.

This is pretty accurate. MIDI instrumentation adds a layer of serenity where we might otherwise might have a simple minimalist dub step-esque track. “Heart Maths” is perfect for creating ambience and zoning out to. Or study music. Versatility is a strength of Typesun, if this single is any indication. Listen/watch for yourself below:
