Thought I’d switch it up and post some responses to trending singles on a Tuesday instead of a Thursday. Anyway…
Fever Fever – “Beautiful Dream”: The Columbus, OH ambient rock quartet just put out a music video for this huge single. Haunting vocals amidst a pounding bass drum carry the track to a fitting climax for the final chorus. Restrained lead vocals juxtapose nicely with passionate harmonizing. The band recently appeared at Illinois’ AgapeFest, and will be playing many spot dates this summer.
Metric – “Youth Without Youth”: I’m excited that this band was announced as the headliner for my local alternative station’s Summerfest. This song is perfect for outside play, whether in your car with the windows down or in an amphitheater. The surreal music video reflects the undertones of the otherwise dance-y song well. It’s requested a lot near where I live, and understandably so.
The Overseer – “Amend”: These guys are a breath of fresh air to the Solid State Records roster. Vocally, they remind me of Underoath in their Aaron Gillespie days but with more clean/rough overlap. The guitar in “Amend” is simply fantastic – the opening riff will draw you in immediately. There aren’t any generic breakdowns here, but none are needed. This young band has big things coming, and the release of their debut We Search, We Dig paired with Wolves at the Gate’s Captors a couple weeks later will create a great summer for heavy music.
TobyMac – “Me Without You”: The now middle-aged Christian king of funk-inspired music gives us a debut track from his next LP that lives up to his reputation. The track has a vibe that’s more retro than normal, and is markedly the opposite from the first single from Tonight, “City On Our Knees.” It’s cheesy, classic, fun Toby Mac. Tweens, teens, soccer moms, and more will have their feet tapping to this in no time.
