Too random to ignore: the Harp Twins

By Ryan G

What if I told you there might be place for harp in popular music? Not as a fleeting anecdote, but as the centerpiece? Camille and Kennerly Kitt, aka the Harp Twins are asking that question.

When I was a student at Wheaton College, I was one of the first to tell you they were hard to miss.  Always traveling in tandem, they became one of the most prominent, er, pairs on campus.  They found this something to be proud of though, and several of my friends in the Conservatory spoke highly of them as musicians and as people.  Apparently, over 7000 people on Facebook alone also think highly of them as musicians.

What might seem to be a prim and proper facade to a stranger hides their true passion – engaging pop culture in their trademark way that challenges perceptions of the “normal” way to engage it.  They are ready to move away from formal events performing in front of the president of the US (really) and into the mainstream limelight.  Their classical harp playing has evolved into several music videos posted online of them performing instrumental renditions of songs in genres spanning pop to metal.  Most recently, they have worked on a cover of The Cranberries’ “Zombie.”  Often, they are performing on electric harp (did you know those existed? I didn’t).  Also, they have landed a number of roles acting in minor films. Most recently, they wrapped up shooting the family/horror/comedy film Creeporia, due out later this year.  Despite my Wheaton bias, I think these girls are headed somewhere.  They have the rare ability to merge the eloquent and bad-to-the-bone appeal, and the novelty appeal to pull it off. Most importantly, they are fully embracing of who they are, and maintain a loyal relationship with fans.
