I came across this interview with Daniel Ek recently that I think is very insightful on the direction of the music industry. Some highlights of things that jumped out at me.
– People discover music through sharing, not radio
– Makes more sense to make music with lasting value – not just catchy enough to make a big impact that will quickly fizzle out
– Streaming services aim to reach the majority – those that pirate. NOT the minority that actually uses iTunes, etc.
I highly recommend reading the interview in full and responding with your thoughts, below. I think Ek makes several good points, most importantly the one that reaching the majority will create the highest profit margins and we need to keep who makes up the majority in mind when we try to reform these industry issues.
