10 little known, non local FMMF artists you should watch

By Ryan G

Have Mercy

This emo influenced rock band is quickly rising and our Tuned Up writer Ray named their release The Earth Pushed Back as his top release of 2013. Live, he maintains they were everything he expected them to be – this coming from a man who loves Thursday and Hot Water Music. They are headlining the PropertyofZack aftershow in the Green Room of the Garden Theatre on Saturday, August 30th.

The Modern Electric

This quartet pop/rock/soul band calls their style of music cinematic – and rightly so. Grooves, catchy melodies and high energy performances have defined the band thus far – garnering them performances with Columbus favorites Nick D’ and the Believers. They are headlining the ColumbusUnderground.com after party at Brothers Drake Meadery on Sunday, August 31st. They are also opening for Cold War Kids on the free outdoor Stella Artois Stage on Sunday August 31st.

The Soil and the Sun

This group is just epic. Cinematic orchestral folky rock. This seven piece band knows how to write organic sounding music, perform high energy sets that engage the audience, yet maintain a down to earth sensibility. They are performing two sets – first, as direct support for Local Natives on the free Cox Stage  (outdoors), and later that night headlining an after party in the Green Room of the Garden Theatre.

Bad Veins

Bad Veins have a stage show that’s built for much bigger rooms than they are used to playing. Consider them a cross between Twenty One Pilots and Walk the Moon, with a whimsical sensibility to boot. Jake Bonta really pounds his drums live. They’re both really humble people, too. They will play the Boston’s Pizza sponsored after party alongside Kishi Bashi at Skully’s Music Diner on Friday, August 29th and also play a free outdoor set on the Baesman Stage before Modern Baseball.

Scientist

The electropop dance rock craze is trendy, but Scientist is the only group doing this that are branding themselves as nerdy. The way they assemble their music has to be as mad scientists in a lab (they’re brainwashing is already working on me). All I know is if they managed to attract Darren King (MUTEMATH) and Chad Howat (Paper Route) for a remix album they must be on to something good. They will play the RadioU after party with Abandon Kansas on Saturday August 30th at Three Legged Mare.

Artifex Pereo

This band was the first touring band to open at the semi-recent “VxV” album release party for Wolves at the Gate. This experimental art rock group with post-hardcore sensibilities absolutely slayed live, let me tell you. Also, that was probably the most I’ve enjoyed a hairy bearded guy flail about on a keyboard. They will play two sets – one free outdoor slot on the Cox Stage on Saturday, August 30th and at the InkAddict after party in the Green Room at the Garden Theatre on Sunday August 31st.

Brick + Mortar

This is the only group to mesh pop and industrial rock in a way that succeeds that I know of. Also, Brandon Asraf is a doppleganger for Coheed and Cambria’s Claudio Sanchez, both in looks and voice (sans the curly hair, though). The band continues to win new fans with good reason. They play a free outdoor set right before New Found Glory on the Cox Stage and will headline the Idobi Radio after party on the Park Street Patio on Saturday August 30th.

PUBLIC

If you’ve followed Tuned Up for an extended period you know we love PUBLIC – a dancey rock trio quickly on the rise out of Cincinnati. Drummer Ben Lapps is also an accomplished finger style guitar player, but he absolutely kills it every time on the drums. The whole band is pretty animated, actually – and exude an air of class while not taking themselves too seriously. The band plays on Sunday August 31st at Three Legged Mare.

Operators

This electronic alt rock project was started by members of Divine Fits – and word is they’re killing it everywhere they go. The vibe we get from them is a little more sophisticated than most of the electronic influenced bands that have been blowing up recently (looking at you, CHVRCHES – even though I still love your music). The band will be supporting Future Islands at an after show at Park Street Patio on August 31st.

Vacationer

If you guessed that this band had a carefree, cheerful sound you’d be correct. How else do you think they’d land a tour with HelloGoodbye? However, while HelloGoodbye may be past their prime Vactioner is ready for the big time. They play twice – once on Saturday August 30th on the free Stella Artois Stage outside, and headlining the Idobi Network after party at the Three Legged Mare on Friday the 29th!
